Finding a photograph in the off season
Shaping your Photographic Mindset
A 4-day photography workshop based in beautiful Durango, Colorado
November 20-22, 2026
It's about that in-between landscape photographers often dismiss: after autumn's spectacle is gone but before winter transforms it. Bare branches, dried grasses, seed heads, decay, muted colors, skeletal forms, weathered vegetation, tangled edges, remnants and things that have stopped demanding attention.
The photographic lesson becomes: What happens when we stop requiring nature to be conventionally beautiful before we consider it worthy of photographing?
There is an in-between landscape photographers often dismiss, the time after autumn’s spectacle has faded but before winter transforms the world. Bare branches, dried grasses, seed heads, decay, muted colors, skeletal forms, weathered vegetation, tangled edges, remnants, and things that have simply stopped demanding our attention.
But there are photographs here. Stop arriving with a predetermined photograph in mind.
Fining a Photograph in the Off-Season is about shifting our photographic mindset and learning to see possibility when the landscape isn’t putting on a show. Rather than chasing peak color, dramatic light, or grand scenery, we’ll slow down and explore the quieter, overlooked details of the natural world.
We’ll look beyond the obvious and explore how line, shape, texture, repetition, negative space, subtle color, light, and relationships can turn seemingly ordinary, or even “ugly,” subjects into compelling photographs.
Through discussion, field exercises, and intentional constraints, we’ll challenge our expectations of what is worthy of being photographed and strengthen one of the most important tools we have as photographers: our ability to see.
Because great photographs don’t always begin with spectacular subjects. Sometimes they begin by simply paying attention.
Itinerary
Note: This itinerary is subject to change due to weather, access, and other conditions
Day 1 (November 20): Meet at 2pm in the lobby of the hotel for a short meet and greet and orientation to include camera settings. We will break to check-in to lodging and meet again for an early dinner before heading out to shoot at sunset.
Day 2 (November 21): We will rise early, meet at our designated place to carpool. We will be on location before the sun rises in order to capture the best light over the peaks and continue shooting through the early morning hours. We will return to town for breakfast. After breakfast, we will work on small scenes and intimate images. In the afternoon, we will meet back at the hotel for editing sessions. We will break for an early dinner before meeting up for the sunset shoot.
Day 3 (November 22): We will rise early, meet at our designated place to carpool. We will be on location before the sun rises in order to capture the best light. We will return to town for breakfast. After breakfast, we will have a classroom session on image processing and take a break to rest up for the sunset/night sessions.
Notes: The agenda may change due to time of year, access, weather, wildlife, and other conditions. The sun rises around 7:10AM and sets around 6:45PM this time of year. When we add travel time to and from locations, this workshop calls for early mornings and late nights, so it's important to take advantage of the afternoon rest breaks. Many locations have limited parking, so car-pooling is important if you feel comfortable riding/driving with others from the group. Optional night shoots will occur depending on conditions.
