Earning my Master of Arts Degree in Photograpy
Today marks my commencement from Academy of Art University earning a Master of Arts Degree in Photography, a milestone that feels both deeply rewarding and humbling. As many of you know, achieving a goal like this requires dedication, sacrifice, shifting priorities, and strong communication with family and the network of people around me. It can be even more challenging when things like “life” happen. Because of my great support network, I managed to achieve this goal while co-caregiving with my dad, managing my personal photography business, and hosting two photography conferences through the Outdoor Photo Alliance.
So, why did I take on this challenge? As a photographic artist, finding a meaningful learning path can feel overwhelming in a world where everyone has access to a camera. For many years, I grew my craft independently, constantly learning from a variety of sources, practicing, and refining my process and vision. The decision to further my journey and pursue graduate studies came from a desire to continue to develop the strong foundation I already established in art and business and to make an even deeper commitment to my craft. It has been a transformative step that challenged me creatively and personally in the best possible ways. It demonstrates commitment, discipline, time, and dedication to advanced training particularly in a competitive industry.
In addition to my professional work, I’ve always had a passion for mentorship, building community, and lifelong learning. I look forward to applying the skills I have developed and honed. This achievement is not a finish line, but a meaningful investment in myself and a large step forward in a career devoted to creating art and inspiring and mentoring others.
There are so many people who made this achievement possible, and I carry immense gratitude for each of them.
First and foremost, I could not have done this without the love, patience, and unwavering support of my amazing husband, Vince Akin. He understood the time, energy, and sacrifices this goal required. There were moments we had to put life on hold and opportunities I had to miss, yet he stood beside me through it all with encouragement and understanding.
My son, Kieron Moon, and dad, Joseph Potthoff, have been among my greatest sources of encouragement. Their belief in me, their excitement for my journey, and their constant support carried me forward more than they know. They truly are my biggest fans.
I am also incredibly thankful for the encouragement and genuine interest from my friends: Martha Montiel, Jeanie Sumrall-Ajero, Michele Sons,Sarah Marino, Brie Stockwell, and Nancy Kurokawa. Your kindness, and support in this great effort has meant more to me than words can express.
Finally, I want to convey my deepest appreciation for the incredible instructors who guided and challenged me throughout this journey. I am especially grateful to James Goins, Alyson Belcher, Tamara Hubbard, David Robin, and Kirsten Belloni. Thank you for your guidance, patience, feedback, and for helping transform not only my art, but also the way I see the world through it.
This achievement may carry my name, but it was built through the love, encouragement, and support of an incredible community around me. For that, I am profoundly grateful.
